Over the last 40 years, the American photographic market experienced a major change in the marketing of photographic products for amateurs and professionals. The rate of change has accelerated even more dramatically in the last 5 years with the advent and overwhelming success of digital photography.

Founded in 1988 as the Mamiya America Corporation by Jan Lederman, Paul Klingenstein (deceased) and Henry Froehlich (deceased), MAC Group, as it’s called today, was founded on the concept of providing photographers, educators and students with the finest tools they need to create an image. The immediate challenge at the onset of the company’s formation was to market, create sales demand, distribute and service the Mamiya line of products. The company was resoundingly successful, quickly bringing Mamiya to the #1 position in market share.

Paul Klingenstein and Henry Froehlich were both visionary marketers who pioneered sales and marketing of photographic equipment from Germany and Japan after the end of World War II. In addition to pioneering products from existing manufacturer’s production, new products suited for the American market were researched and developed to provide deeper market penetration for the manufacturers who entrusted their American marketing to the talents of these two marketing trailblazers.

Their original vision is very much alive and well at the MAC Group today under the leadership of President Jan Lederman. Establishing a market, providing marketing know-how to its suppliers and creating the demand for the products – differentiating marketing from merely selling – forms the expertise MAC Group offers other manufacturers.
